Facts:
- B. multiplex forms a medium-sized clump with slender culms (stems) and dense foliage suitable for hedges and live fences since the stems and foliage form a dense growth that creates an effective barrier.
- Bambusa multiplex is an evergreen Bamboo growing to 4.5 m
- The plant is sometimes harvested for its edible young shoots
- The species is pollinated by Wind
- It can grow in semi-shade or no shade and prefer moist soil
- The plant makes a good screen or hedge and windbreak
- The culm of this bamboo is used in papermaking, umbrella handle and fishing poles
- The canes are used as a source of weaving material formats, basket and other household goods due to its properties which are splits easily and flexible
Medicinal uses:
- The juice from young shoots was used in treating asthma, cough, gallbladder problems
- Bamboo shoots, both fresh and fermented, are a good source of phytosterols that are the precursors of many pharmaceutically active steroids found in plants
- edible having rich protein and fibre content with no fat content and thus can be recommended for cardiac and diabetic patients
Side effect:
- Prolong use of bamboo shoot worsen hypothyroidism and goitre.
Toxicology:
- The bamboo shoots when harvested early offers small-sized shoots besides having high cyanogens content rendering it unfit for consumption.
