Benefits:
- Provide at least 5% of a person’s daily requirement of fibre, copper, manganese, vitamins and minerals
- Source of phenolic compounds that acts as antioxidants (help in eliminating free radicals)
- Contains fibre that may benefit cholesterol level
- Contains polyphenols that help protect the body from cancer. In the long term, may help prevent tumour growth and the spread the cancer cells
- Anthocyanins and chlorogenic acid protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
- Anthocyanins may help by preventing new blood vessels from forming in the tumour, reducing inflammation and blocking the enzymes that help cancer cells spread.
- Nasunin (an anthocyanin in eggplant skin) help protect brain cell membranes from damage caused by free radicals. It also helps transport nutrients into cells and moves waste out.
Side effect:
- Contains oxalates that contribute to kidney stone formation in some people
- Allergic due to a lipid transfer protein
- Solanine poisoning because containing alkaloids including solanine which can be toxic
