Scientific name: Averrhoa bilimbi

Malay name: Belimbing buluh

Facts:


It is a fruit-bearing tree of the genus Averrhoa, family Oxalidaceae.

It originated from Moluccas, Indonesia the species is now cultivated and found throughout Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, and Malaysia
In India, where it is usually found in gardens, the bilimbi has gone wild in the warmest regions of the country 
The tree is reaching up to 15m in height 
Bilimbi leaves are alternate, pinnate, measuring approximately 30–60 cm in length. 
The fruit is ellipsoidal, elongated and measuring about 4 – 10 cm. The skin of this Averrhoa bilimbi is smooth to slightly bumpy, thin and waxy turning from light green to yellowish-green when ripe.



General Uses

1. It consists of a good source of oxalic acid

2. As a key ingredient in many Indonesian dishes such as “sambal belimbing buloh” and “asam sunti”

3. Cucumber tree usually uses as a stain remover in the Philippines.

4. Bilimbi fruits contain N, Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Se
.
5. This fruit is a rich source of vitamin C&D, low in fat and has antioxidants effect.

6. The food value of bilimbi per 100g of edible portion contains moisture, proteins, fibre, ash, carotene thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and ascorbic acid




Pharmacological and medicinal uses:


1.  Antimicrobial 
 The fruit and leaf extract has good antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

2. Anti-inflammatory
 The syrup prepared from the fruit is taken as a cure for inflammation and to stop rectal bleeding and alleviate internal haemorrhoids.

3. Topical uses
Leaves are applied as a paste on itches, swellings of mumps, rheumatism and on skin eruption.

4. Treatment for venomous  diseases
The fresh or fermented bilimbi leaves are applied on bites of the poisonous creature.

5. Treatment of cough
A flower infusion is said to be effective against cough and thrush.

6. Cause sweating
The fruits combine with pepper are eaten to cause sweating when people are feeling under the weather" or known as cold.

7. Control of obesity 
In some village in the Thiruvananthapuram district of India, the fruit of the bilimbi was used in folk medicine to control obesity.


Side effect: 


Acute kidney failure due to tubular necrosis caused by oxalate because this fruit contains high levels of oxalate has been recorded in several people who drank the concentrated juice on continuous days as treatment for high cholesterol.
