Pharmacological uses
1. Antioxidant
- Clove extract can slow the growth of human cancer cells. Clove essential oil and ethanol extract obtained from clove is toxic towards breast cancer cells. It also has an effect on retarding tumour growth.
- Mouthwash containing clove extract is proven effective in preventing plaque and gingivitis from occurring in the mouth. It also decreases oral inflammation and harmful bacteria from inside the mouth. It is more effective than commercial mouthwash in controlling the mouth bacteria.
3. Diabetes management
- Clove extract contains nigericin which reduced the insulin resistance in muscle cells. Subjects than ingest clove extract also shows improvements in glucose tolerance, beta cells function, and insulin secretion.
4. Bone preservation
- Clove extract contains phenolic compounds, such as eugenol and its derivatives. These ingredients are believed useful in preserving bone density and controlling mineral content in bone. They can also reduce the possibility of acquiring osteoporosis in elderly subjects.
5. Anti-mutagenic properties
- Phenylpropanoids found in clove extract have anti-mutagenic properties, which when administered to cells will control the mutagenic effects of the cells at a significant rate.
Side effects:
• Skin, eye, and respiratory irritation
• Allergic reaction on the skin
• Fatal if goes into airways
• Increase body’s response towards warfarin
