Definition

consists of aerial part or whole plant of C. asiatica (L.) Urb

Pegaga (Malay). ji xui cao (Chinese). vallarai (Tamil). assiatic pennywort (English)

Character

The whole plant is greyish green in colour with a bitter taste slightly and characteristics odour. 

Plant Morphology

  • slender creeping herb with long-stalked leaf 
  • leaves are green, reniform, rounded apex and smooth texture
  • flowers are very small with reddish petal and hermaphrodite 
  • fruits are small and mericarp in nature 


Medicinal uses:

Uses described in folk medicine, not supported by experimental or clinical data
  • traditionally used to treat albinism, anaemia, asthma, bronchitis, cellulite, cholera, constipation, dermatitis, diarrhoea, dizziness 
  • used as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and a "brain tonic"
