Scientific name: Garcinia mangostana

Malay name: Manggis


Facts: 
Known as “the queen of fruits”.
Mangosteen fruit is dark purple or reddish, soft with white and pulp that is easily edible.
Slightly acid and sweet flavour and a pleasant aroma.
Distribution in India, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand.



General uses:



1. Used in the treatment of skin infections and wounds.
2. Therapy of various conditions such as dysentery, different urinary disorders, cystitis and gonorrhoea.
3. Fighting infections, healing wounds, and treating diarrhoea and related gastrointestinal complaints.
4. Widespread biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-proliferative, immunostimulatory and antibacterial/antiviral effects.



Pharmacological activity:


Antimicrobial activity
Help against Staphylococcus epidermis and Propionibacterium acnes, which a pus-forming bacterium and triggered inflammation in acne. 



Anti-inflammatory activity
Inhibited lipopolysaccharide, stimulated no production and cytotoxicity against RAW cells. The anti-inflammatory effect of alpha and gamma mangosteen evaluated by carrageenan-induced paw oedema in mice.


Antioxidant activity
Water extract and ethanol showed high antioxidant activity. The extract was tested on neuroblastoma cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide. Both of the extracts showed neuroprotective activity. 



Anti-diabetic activity

A single dose of 100 mg/kg of ethanol extract from pericarp fruit whose main compound is alpha-mangosteen, beta-mangosteen and gardening reduces postprandial glycaemia addition after oral maltose tolerance test. A study explained in diabetic rats not only showed hypoglycemic effects but also reduced serum triglycerides and density lipoproteins very low, urea and creatinine while increasing high-density lipoprotein and total protein.
