Facts:
• Woody spreading shrub
• Elliptical-shaped leaves with a rough surface covered with short hairs
• Slightly bitter in taste
• Originated from Madagascar and can now be found throughout Southeast Asia
Pharmacological uses:
1. Antioxidant activity
- The leaves contain a high level of water-soluble vitamins, such as C, B(1), and B(2), which makes the leaves have antioxidant properties. Besides, it is also proven that moderate amount of catechins, alkaloids, tannin, and caffeine can be found in the leaves, which further improves the antioxidant activity of the leaves.
- The leaves extract contains a high level of antioxidant and polyphenol that is believed to contribute to antilipidemic and antidiuretic properties. This has been proven in hyperglycaemic subjects that when they consumed the extract, their blood glucose level dropped significantly.
-The leaves extract shows cytotoxicity effects towards many cancer cells such as liver, colon, cervix, breast cancer cells. The extract is especially effective in destroying cancer cells MCF-7 that causes breast cancer.
4. Wound healing activity
-Ester glycoside of caffeic acid that can be found in the leaves extract are known to exhibit analgesic activity internally, and antibacterial and antifungal activity when used at the outside. Catechins in the leaves extract also provide a suitable environment for wound healing activity.
